Badminton saga

I had a stressful afternoon yesterday. It was a crazy day at work with China and Obama causing mayhem in stocks and currency markets. My stress level tripled when I received a call from a sobbing Jacob at 2pm yesterday in the office. I was shocked to get the call because he does not have a handphone and he was supposed to stay back in school for his badminton CCA. He broke down the minute he heard my voice, telling me that he wants Gong Gong to fetch him NOW and he does not want to go for badminton. He told me he is calling me from a public phone and he did not see any P1 kids at the auditorium, the venue of the CCA. He cannot stop crying and I felt so bad that I could not go and pick him up immediately as market was busy and my team, as usual, was short handed. So I asked him to wait at the clock tower for Gong Gong while I contacteded my dad to fetch him immediately.

30 mins later, I called my dad to see if he had Jacob with him. He told me he is still stuck in a Jam at Bukit Timah!! I panicked as I started imagining the risk of Jacob getting bullied by bigger boys while waiting alone at the clock tower. I called the school to ask for the form teacher to go look for him. She missed him the first time as Jacob had walked back to the canteen to call me after waiting for 30 mins. I asked him to walk back to the clock tower to wait and the form teacher finally found him there. She tried to persuade him to go for badminton but he simply refused. While I was on the phone with her, my dad arrived and Jacob was overjoyed to see him.

Later in the evening, I found out from Jacob that he actually went to the auditorium right after school. He saw some P5 kids there, got scared and went to the general office to ask for help on the venue for the badminton CCA. The staff brought him back to the same place. He must have felt intimidated by the bigger boys. He went straight to the canteen, saw someone using the public phone, waited for his turn and dialed my number. He used a $1 coin instead of 10cents! No wonder he was crying for quite a while and the line was not cut off! He admitted that he was scared being alone as none of his friends stayed back for CCA.

I related the story to a few of my colleagues and all thought I was too aggressive leaving him alone after school in the 4th week! Some of them had their maid or grandma with them after school till P3 before CCA starts while most just skip CCA in P1! I then recalled that Tessa also had Hetty with her in P1 during lunch before her ballet CCA. I felt so guilty towards Jacob. I gave him lots of hugs and kisses when I reached home. I chose to focus on the positive part of him being smart enough to call me from public phone and him being brave enough to approach the general office for help. I went to bed feeling guilty and I even dreamt about Jacob playing badminton happily in the auditorium!!!

The joy of being missed!

I was away for a business trip to Tokyo for 2 days and it was obvious that the kids missed me. They gave me a warm reception when I fetched them from my dad's house today. Even my usually nonchalant son stopped his ball game to give me a super big hug when he saw me!

Another clear sign that they missed me was - they talked non stop on the drive home and they have to fight for their turn to speak! They complained about papa sitting at his computer everyday after reaching home, leaving Tessa to pack Jacob's schoolbag for him. They also complained about papa's addiction to bejewelled every night while sleeping besides them. As usual, Tessa has endless stories to tell about her school mates but I have to say she has been a good sister while I was away. She made sure Jacob got his pocket money everyday, tested Jacob on his first spelling list and told me she gave him full marks despite his untidy handwriting!

Jacob was proud to report that he has 3 friends in school- Dylan, Jaden and Mark. He even knows that his class monitor Bryan is signing up for soccer while his assistant class monitor Edric is joining hip hop. I have signed him up for badminton, squash and bowling, in order of preference. Results will be out tom and I hope he will get his first choice!

Meetings in Tokyo went well, shopping was great and the kids missed me! What a wonderful week!

Interesting statistics from ACS P1 Picnic...

Of all the 8 parents that I met during the picnic today
- All are stay-at-home mums except for 2
- 3 have 4 kids, 3 have 3 kids and 2 have 2 kids!
- Of the 3 that have 4 kids, they all have 3 boys and 1 girl.
- Still on those that have 4 kids, 2 of them have their eldest kid in the gifted program. The last one is too early to tell as her eldest is only P1.
- 2 set of parents are doctors
- Only one of them looks like a taitai and she is also that one that carries a BIRKIN!

First comment that the form teacher said to me and Ian :
- Jacob is very handsome! ;-)

Another interesting titbit:
Jacob was voted the class commando and he turned it down!! Apparently 4 boys were picked to stand in front of the class to shout " class stand!" on Wednesday. Jacob garnered the most votes but he refused to accept the post! The form teacher said she will offer him the post again in term 2 since he is not ready now. And my son did not even breathe a word about this to me despite me probing about school every night. What a complete contrast to Tessa, who has endless stories to tell me every night and I have to cut her short!!!

I am stressed!!

I am feeling stressed because
- Jacob is not enjoying school like Tessa. He is not warming up to his new friends as there have been little or no chance to interact through games. Very disappointed with the " holistic" environment so far.

- Tessa's Chinese and Science syllabus are so tough! No wonder they say P1 and P2 are honeymoon years!

- I worry about Ini getting lost when picking up Tessa and Gong Gong running into issues when picking up Jacob.

- First day of work in 2010 today and I felt overwhelmed. Back to the 2 toilet breaks a day and no lunch routine and time just flew by. Loads of visitors in town next week => lots of meeting planning to do. Need to read up to present our latest views for my business trip next week. Getting lots of emails from boss but not getting replies when I need them=> very frustrating. The list goes on and on. Is the $$ worth all the stress? I am beginning to have second thoughts.

First day of school

It was raining on the first day of school! This is a nightmare for parents who are driving as the traffic will be worse than usual. Tessa was dropped off at MGS at around 6.50am by Ian, before he returned to pick up Jacob and me. The traffic jam was so bad that we barely made it to school at 7.30am! To made things worse, I got lost in the BIG school so poor Jacob was touring the primary block with me to find the classroom! No more driving to school from tom onwards! It will be a father n son bonding session going forward as they walk to school together!

First recess for Jacob went smoothly. I am not sure why he was assigned 2 buddies instead of one. They bought him chicken rice, taught him where to place the plates after eating, where to wash hands and where is the toilet. His buddies told me they usually play during recess instead of eat! Having 2 weeks of play time taken away by a P1 boy must not be a very appealing assignment!

Going to pick up Jacob soon.... here are some pictures taken this morning... enjoy!

Looking back...

I just completed the performance review with my team last week. Coincidentally ( they swore they did not discuss before writing!), most of their written remarks start with " Its been a tough year in 2009....".

It has indeed been the toughest year of my career. Record number of friends and colleagues lost their jobs and some are still jobless now. Big cultural change in the bank following the merger and I was thrown into the " dog-eat-dog" environment. Missed my budget for the first time in my career and yet I have to stay positive in front of the team to keep them motivated. One blog entry will not be enough to contain the stressful experiences at work this year.

On the personal front, the key event is definitely the passing of my long time friend Michelle. At times, it seems so unreal that she is not with us anymore, especially when I look at the pictures taken with her this year. The family is moving forward and I pray that 2010 will be a better year for them.

In spite of the work stress, there are also many positive things to remember about 2009
- Jacob got into ACPS
- Tessa did well for her exams with minimal guidance from me.
- We sold Tessarina before the flood that drowned the Ferrari
- We all got hooked on " Bejeweled"
- I bought record number of bags ( highly correlated to work stress!)
- I still have a job and a chance to hope for good bonus
- I still have my wonderful family and friends!

Life is not so bad after all! Happy New Year my friends! Hopefully when I look back at 2010 at the end of this year, the starting line will be " Its been a great year...."
